Illinois soccer announced today the additions of walk-ons Emily Coral and Izzi Wirtz to the 2024 roster.

"The Illini are excited to add these two incredible student-athletes to our 2024 class for the things that they bring both on and off the field," head coach Janet Rayfield said.

Emily Coral, a goalkeeper from Glenbard North High School and Firebirds SC, is a three-year varsity letterwinner. She earned DuKane All-Conference honors in 2023 and 2024 and was named Team Defensive MVP for the 2023-24 season.

Rayfield commented, "Emily will bring a unique perspective and South American flair to our goalkeeping unit and our team as a whole. Growing up in Ecuador, where soccer is a way of life, Emily brings a passion and an understanding of the game to the program that will be a great addition on the field as well as bring something new to our team culture."

Coral chose Illinois because of its "exceptional academic reputation and vibrant campus life," emphasizing that "the coaching staff here made me feel like I belonged. That was a major factor in my decision. I feel like I could reach my full potential in both my academic and athletic development here in Illinois."

Izzi Wirtz, who plays midfielder/defender from Lyons Township High School and Chicago Inter SC, is a four-year varsity letterwinner. She has been selected twice for all-sectional honors and three times for all-conference recognition. Wirtz tallied 12 goals and six assists while serving as team captain from 2023-24. She also won the Illinois State Cup with Chicago Inter SC in 2022.

Rayfield stated, "Izzi brings a tenacity and fight that will add depth to our backline. She has a standard of work ethic that shows in her development on the field and her academic success throughout her high school career."

Wirtz cited Illinois' positivity, dedication, and inclusivity as reasons for her choice: "I chose Illinois because of the positivity, dedication, and inclusivity throughout both the campus and the women's soccer program. I know this program and the academic programs here will push me to succeed on the field and in the classroom."
