On May 19, 2024, at 1:54 a.m., Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1100 block of N. Mattis Avenue following a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers found evidence of gunfire but no witnesses who could provide details about the incident. Shortly thereafter, two victims arrived at a local hospital via personal transport.
The victims, both males from Rantoul, had suffered gunshot wounds. A 24-year-old victim had sustained a life-threatening injury to his torso and later succumbed to his injuries despite receiving treatment. The second victim, aged 28, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his leg and remains in stable condition.
Initial investigations suggest that the incident occurred in the parking lot of a business near the intersection of Mattis & Bradley. Unknown subjects reportedly produced firearms and opened fire, resulting in the injuries to both victims. All parties involved subsequently fled the scene. Alongside the injuries, property damage was reported on one vehicle.
Officers are currently canvassing the surrounding area for potential witnesses and video footage that may aid their investigation. Residents or businesses in proximity with exterior surveillance camera systems have been urged to contact the police department. The investigation is ongoing and future updates will be provided as they become available.
