Firefighters and staff from the Champaign Fire Department, along with members of the Equity and Engagement Department, are set to join forces with volunteers from the Annual Smoke Alarm Blitz in Honor of Christian Sheehan and the American Red Cross. Their mission is to go door-to-door in a northeast Champaign neighborhood on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The team will offer to check smoke alarms and install free smoke alarms in homes that need them.

This Smoke Alarm Blitz will commence at 8:00 a.m., covering approximately 100 homes within the boundaries of Grove Street to the south; Bradley Avenue to the north; Sixth Street to the east; and Fourth Street to the west.

On May 10, 2024, participants went door-to-door in this neighborhood providing information about the upcoming installation blitz. They informed residents about the campaign and offered details on how to set an appointment if they were unavailable on Saturday, May 18.

Those who wish to contribute towards continuing the efforts of the Annual Smoke Alarm Blitz in Honor of Christian Sheehan can do so at Community Foundation of East Central Illinois via their website www.cfeci.org.

The Champaign Fire Department emphasizes that smoke alarms save lives. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms play a significant role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. It recommends testing smoke alarms once a month and replacing them after ten years. If a smoke alarm sounds, individuals should immediately evacuate their premises and stay out until it's safe.
