State Senator Chapin Rose from Mahomet hosted a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) program in Springfield earlier this month. The event welcomed high school students from the 51st Senate District to the Illinois State Capitol to gain insights into the state's legislative process.

"This is a great opportunity for students to engage themselves in the legislative process," Sen. Rose expressed. "These students are our future, and I am grateful I am able to speak with them and offer my knowledge and guidance."

During the YAC meeting, students participated in a mock committee hearing, undertaking various roles like lawmakers, reporters, concerned citizens, and lobbyists. This exercise aimed to provide a hands-on experience of the legislative process within an actual committee room at the Capitol Complex.

"I thought it would be a great opportunity to come to Springfield to see how my state government works and further educate myself," shared Jack Patterson from Lawrenceville High School. "I have learned interview tactics, how to answer questions, how things work, and potential career fields."

Sen. Rose's YAC program is an annual initiative open to high school students in the 51st Senate District. He encourages interested students to inquire with their teachers and principals to participate in the future YAC programs.

"It is important for young people to understand how the legislative process works so they know what they are voting for," remarked Shiloh High School Student Briana Reese.
