Two Arrested in Overnight Armed Robbery

Two men have been apprehended for their involvement in an armed robbery that took place at a convenience store overnight in Champaign. According to reports from the Champaign Police Department, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 23, 2024, at a business located on N. Mattis Avenue.

During the robbery, one of the suspects brandished a weapon, while the other acted as a lookout. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the perpetrators managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of cash. Following the incident, law enforcement officers swiftly initiated a search for the suspects, deploying K9 units and canvassing the area for potential witnesses and evidence.

The diligent efforts of the Champaign Police led to the apprehension of the two suspects as they were leaving a residence on Holly Hill Drive. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at the property, resulting in the discovery of evidence linking the individuals to the robbery on Mattis Avenue. The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Randy C. Copeland from Chicago and Travon Gibson, also 19, from Hammond, Indiana. Both individuals were arrested on charges including armed robbery and unlawful use of weapons.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward by contacting the Champaign Police Department at 217-351-4545. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers via phone or online platforms. It is important to note that all individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
