On March 28, 2024, the Champaign County Community Coalition, Parkland College, Champaign Unit 4, and Urbana 116 schools joined forces to highlight academic achievement within the African American student community. The 2nd annual "Rising Star" program aimed to commend 5th or 8th grade students of African American descent who have demonstrated academic promise or excellence.

Utilizing various metrics such as MAP, IAR, attendance, and discipline records, both the Champaign and Urbana school districts meticulously selected the top 100 students from these grade levels. The students, along with their families, congregated at the event to rejoice in their academic accomplishments, supported by City Council Members and personnel from the Equity and Engagement and Police Departments.

The ceremony, resembling a graduation ceremony, featured speeches from distinguished individuals including representatives from Parkland College, the City, a student ambassador, and both superintendents. Attendees came dressed in attire symbolizing higher education and Greek life, adding to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding these exceptional scholars.
