The City of Champaign has announced lane closures at the intersection of University Avenue and State Street for necessary construction work. The closures will allow for the removal of a traffic signal and the pouring of a new concrete base at the southwest corner of the intersection.

According to the Public Works Department, the eastbound lane of University Avenue and potentially a southbound lane of State Street will be affected. The lane closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 19, and Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

CS&L, the company responsible for the construction work, has taken this measure to ensure the safety and efficiency of the project. By closing the lanes during the designated hours, they will be able to carry out the necessary work without causing major disruptions to the flow of traffic.

"We understand that lane closures can be inconvenient for motorists, but these temporary measures are essential for the completion of the project," said a spokesperson from CS&L.

The lane closures will allow crews to remove the existing traffic signal and construct a new concrete base, providing a solid foundation for future improvements at the intersection. This work is part of ongoing efforts by the city to enhance traffic flow and improve overall safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and expect delays in the area during the specified dates and times. Alternative routes are encouraged to avoid congestion and minimize any inconvenience caused by the lane closures.

The City of Champaign appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and commuters during this construction period. The temporary inconvenience will result in long-term benefits for the community.
