The Champaign Fire Department swiftly responded to a fire that broke out in a single-family home located in the 1400 block of Briarwood Dr. on Tuesday, February 13, at 1:18 p.m. The fire, which originated in the bedroom, was successfully extinguished by the diligent efforts of the fire crews.
According to reports, the fire was initially reported by a passerby who noticed smoke emanating from the split-level residence. Upon arrival at the scene, the fire crews observed flames coming from an upper-level window. They quickly deployed a single hose line and effectively contained the fire within the bedroom, preventing it from spreading further.
At present, investigators are still on-site conducting their investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the firefighters. However, amidst the chaos, the brave firefighters managed to rescue one dog, while another sadly perished in the incident.
In light of this incident, the Champaign Fire Department emphasizes the importance of maintaining a functioning smoke alarm in every residence. They also urge residents to have and practice a home escape plan, as smoke alarms can provide crucial early notification in life-threatening situations.
