The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a multi-family apartment building at 709 S. Mattis Ave., Friday, June 23, 2023, at 5:42 p.m. Fire crews quickly extinguished this exterior fire.
Firefighters responded to a report of a fire on a patio from an occupant of this two-story building. Once on the scene, fire crews reported moderate smoke and fire coming from the rear of the building. Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines and kept the fire from extending into the building.
The cause of this fire has not been determined as investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. There were no firefighter or occupant injuries reported. The occupants of this eight-unit building will not be displaced.The Champaign Fire Department reminds everyone to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
