Sophomore Riley Wells concluded his second outdoor campaign at Illinois State while senior Cole Maguire wrapped up his career as a Redbird on day three of the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
In the 800m run, Wells finished as the first runner out of qualification for the NCAA Championships. His time of 1:47.89 was the 12th-fastest in the field, as he finished fifth in heat one. Although Wells ran a faster time than Oregon's Luis Peralta, the Duck earned the auto-bid, as he finished third in heat three at 1:47.92.
On the 2021-22 season, Wells swept the indoor and outdoor 800m titles at the MVC Championships, earning his third championship in the event overall. He also ranks No. 2 in school history in the outdoor 800m.
Senior Cole Maguire competed in his final race in an ISU uniform, as he clocked a time of 51.47 to finish 17th in the 400m hurdles. Over his four years as a Redbird, Maguire was crowned 2022 MVC champion, earned All-Valley honors three times and finishes as the third-fastest 400m hurdler in school history.
