The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported “more than 1 in 3 high school students” experienced constant sadness and hopelessness — Republican Sen. Jason Barickman said a council is needed to be the students’ voice.
Back in 2019, students went to Barickman to suggest ideas for similar support.
“It always amazes me to hear the students discuss issues that they are passionate about,” he said in a release on his website in 2019. “These young men and women are engaged and passionate about major issues. I hope the students leave here with a new appreciation for government service and an understanding of what is involved with taking your idea, building a consensus and advancing it into law.”
The bill was assigned to the Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies Committee.
The bill calls for the Student Mental Health Council to meet at least four times per year, and it will make recommendations regarding barriers to youth feeling supported and empowered.
Barickman said the council is limited, but he understands the intent.
“I understand that the intent is to add that voice to the partnership that the sponsor thinks is not there today,” Barickman said.
The bill passed with 46 "yes" votes and zero "no" votes.
The bill was filed in January by Democratic Sen. Mike Simmons.
