State Sen. Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) recently urged his constituents to keep Illinois' farmers in mind for the sacrifices they make and contributions they give to the state, following a busy summer focused on the local community.

Bennett's Facebook post follows his ongoing encouragement for the local community to be mindful of those working hard in their midst, such as farmers.

"Throughout this pandemic, Illinois farmers have continued to put food on our tables despite risks to their health and safety," Bennett said in an Oct. 12 Facebook post. "This #NationalFarmersDay, tell a farmer how much you appreciate their hard work and sacrifice to keep our families fed."

In June, Bennett also drew attention to $62,000 in grants for local fire departments, stating that the money to purchase equipment came at a critical time, according to the Chambana Sun. Bennett said that the grants to the Savoy Fire Department and Carroll, Gifford, and Westville Area fire protection districts would help to replace outdated equipment.

"First responders put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. These equipment grants come at a critical time for local fire departments and will allow them to replace outdated gear that no longer meets current standards," Bennett said.

Other activities from Bennett over the summer included championing a bill that will require consumer notification of pharmacy retail prices when purchasing medications, and the establishment of a youth book club in his district, the Sun reported. The bill goes into effect on Jan. 1.

“The signing of this legislation establishes truth and transparency for the pharmaceutical industry,” Bennett said. “With this new law on the books, consumers will have the ability to make informed decisions about where to buy their prescriptions.”

Bennett's book club assigned students eight books to read over the summer, with the titles of the books reported to his office, according to the Sun. The reward for participating was a gift card and a certificate from Bennett.
