State Sen. Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) is applauding Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signing into law a bill he proposed requiring pharmaceutical companies to post a notice alerting consumers that they have the right to request current pharmacy retail prices when making a purchase.
“The signing of this legislation establishes truth and transparency for the pharmaceutical industry,” Bennett posted on Facebook. “With this new law on the books, consumers will have the ability to make informed decisions about where to buy their prescriptions.”
The new law also establishes that pharmacies must share with customers the retail price of a prescription drug, both in writing and electronically, prior to a sale being completed.
“Consumers have desired for far too long for ways to hold the drug industry accountable,” Bennett said in a post to his website. “Now, they will finally have access to affordable prescription drugs and the pricing information they deserve.”
Signed into law in early August, the legislation is slated to officially become law on Jan. 1, 2022.
