City of Urbana Sustainability Advisory Commission met June 1.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Commissioners Present: Maddy Garbacz, Stacy Gloss, Jessica Lehmkuhl, Andrew Stumpf, Morgan White, Grace Wilken

Commissioners Absent: James Corbin, Tomas Delgado

Staff Present: Scott Tess

Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum

Chair Gloss called the meeting to order, a roll was called and a quorum was present.

Approval of Minutes

Commission Member White motioned to approve the minutes from the March 2, 2021 meeting. Commission Member Corbin seconded the motion and carried by roll call vote as follows:

Aye: Maddy Garbacz, Stacy Gloss, Jessica Lehmkuhl, Andrew Stumpf, Morgan White, Grace Wilken 

Nay: None

Public Input

Sarah Nixon, a member of the public, updated the commission on progress of her data collection for a future presentation.

Staff Report

Geothermal

Geothermal Urbana-Champaign has secured 12 contracts for installation totaling 52 tons of capacity and has 27 proposals totaling 96 tons of capacity out for review by property owners. The deadline for signing contracts is May 30.

Hazard Mitigation Plan

Staff has presented an updated Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan to City Council for approval. The plan saw changes that incorporated elements of climate change science including changes in stormwater patterns.

Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Sale

Staff has completed a contract with a vendor for an all online, all delivery bulk rain barrel and compost bin sale. Sales are open now with deliveries starting June 15. See

Public Engagement

Staff spoke to on a webinar hosted in part by the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center titled Cities and Regions’ Solutions to Global Nature-related Challenges.

Announcements

∙ Geothermal UC “Everything you wanted to know about geothermal but were too afraid to ask” Extravaganza:

o The event will include an open question and answer session about any geothermal topic, whether it be about your proposed contract, about your site assessment or whatever! The program team will also share the successes of geothermal in Urbana Champaign including the most recent install of the largest geothermal system at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus and will feature several homes with geothermal with an open house with a geothermal owner and believer. Register today!

Discussion of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Commission Members Lehmkuhl and Wilken updated the commission on the progress made in relation to action items from the May 2021 meeting. A discussion ensued.

Discussion of Food Waste Diversion

Commission Member Wilken updated the commission on the flyer for the Commercial Food Scrap Composting Pilot Project program. A discussion ensued.

Review of Annual Reports

Scott Tess answered commission members’ pre-submitted questions regarding the Annual Reports. A discussion ensued.

Next Sustainability Advisory Commission Meeting

June 29, 2021 at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers at the Urbana City Building or by Zoom depending on circumstances.

With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.
