Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) advocated for his bill during the third reading of HB 2814.
House Bill 2814, proposed to revise the current School Code, has garnered favorable unanimous votes in its two recent committee hearings which Halbrook mentioned during the House floor hearing.
The bill “amends the school code for the school board oath and removes unnecessary language,” Halbrook explained. “This was agreed-to language with IEA. I know of no opposition and I asked for a positive roll call.”
A House floor amendment was adopted and the bill, which according to the amendment would take effect immediately upon becoming a law, deletes certain sections of the school board members' oath of office.
It also removes sections on setting the course for the school district, ensuring students have the opportunity to attain their maximum potential, ensuring student assessment, and serving as education’s key advocate on behalf of students and the school.
HB2814 unanimously passed the House with 116 yes votes and awaits hearings at the Senate with Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) as the chief Senate sponsor.
