CHAMPAIGN COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION: Nca Charter School Application Denied By The Champaign Unit 4 Board Of Education

Files

Champaign Community Unit School District No. 4 Board of Education issued the following announcement on May 2.

The Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education would like to thank the organizers of the North Champaign Academy for submitting proposal for a new charter school for consideration. It is encouraging to see community leaders organize and advocate for education in our community.

The Board shares the deep concerns of the organizers regarding the disparity in student achievement that exists in our schools and is commonplace across the nation. We firmly believe that we should not accept this outcome and will continue to work tirelessly to create a public school system that works for all our students.

As stewards of public funds, the Board of Education has the responsibility to evaluate charter school proposals to determine if they meet state requirements. This means that not only should a proposal be well intended, but it must also outline a solid academic program and demonstrate economic viability for both the charter school and the school district.

After a thorough review of the proposal submitted by the Steering Committee of the North Champaign Academy, the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education denies the proposal. The Board determined that it did not meet the statutory requirements for a charter school. Primary concerns center on the lack of a viable school location, lack of a viable academic program, and failure to demonstrate the plan would be economically sound for both the charter school and the District as required by state law. The Board resolution on this matter contains a detailed rationale for the denial.

While the proposal has been denied, the Board will continue to seek ways for the community to collaborate and partner with the District. Together, we will continue to pursue our mission to guide all students in gaining knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to direct their lives, improve a diverse society, and excel in a changing world.
