Trading overdue fees for food, Woodstock Public Library (WPL) will welcome donations during its annual “Have a Heart” week Feb. 12-18 — with canned food items innovatively canceling late fines — as well as host various health-related events.
The creative “Food for Fines” amnesty program will waive fines for borrowers with overdue items. Residents are encouraged to bring non-perishable items such as peanut butter and jelly; canned fruits, vegetables, soups and sauce; dry milk and pasta. Personal care items are also needed, including soap, toothpaste and toilet paper.
All week long, visitors can take advantage of children’s valentine crafts and a “blind date with a book” — books that are “wrapped so you won’t know what you’ve got until after you check it out,” stated WPL on its website.
Running 9 a.m.-noon on Feb. 18, Mercy Health System staff will be on-site to offer free blood pressure screenings along with giveaways for children and health and safety information.
Additionally, WPL will sponsor a 4-7 p.m. blood drive on Feb. 21 to benefit regional hospitals. To donate, participants can visit www.heartlandbc.org, call the library at 815-338-0542 or walk in. Proof of identity must be shown with a photo ID; the library is found at 414 W. Judd St.
The non-perishable trade event covers up to a maximum of $5 per library card and will not include lost or damaged fees.
