The Urbana City Council passed an ordinance Feb. 1 that outlines specific housing codes for transitional homes.
The ordinance defines transitional housing as a housing arrangement providing shelter and support services for people who would otherwise be homeless. Transitional houses should also have a focus on preparing residents for independent living.
The ordinance creates new categories for transitional houses. The first category allows for up to four homeless residents plus one live-in resident. The second category allows for up to eight homeless residents plus two live-in residents.
The ordinances also align transitional housing with the rest of the city's zoning code and provide parking requirements.
