As part of its ongoing effort to meet and highlight local businesses, the Champaign City Council welcomed a presentation from the local start-up IntelliWheels during its Feb. 9 study session at the Champaign City Building.
The company was founded in 2010 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and recently gained attention as the local winner of the InnovateHER business plan competition for its Tinker 3D configuration program. The program is unique in that it is designed specifically for wheelchairs.
IntelliWheels officials said similar programs have been used for cars, apparel and many other industries for years in order to create highly customized products that meet customers' needs, but that Tinker is the first of its kind for wheelchair designers and users.
By winning the county-level round of InnovateHer, IntelliWheels has advanced to become one of 10 national finalists.
