Two homeowners received approval from the Urbana City Council on Jan. 4 for a major setback variance that will allow them to build an additional parking space at 410 W. Florida Ave.
The variance will allow Itai Seggev and Dara Goldman to build directly against their property lines rather than being constrained to the required 25-foot setback.
The council approved the ordinance in part because the city has removed parking spaces on Florida Avenue in anticipation of a repaving project it acknowledged will not happen for several years. Without street parking, cars at Seggev and Goldman's house have to pull in directly behind one another and back out to let other cars leave, creating an inconvenience. The variance will allow them to expand their parking area so that cars can enter and exist independently.
The ordinance was approved by a 7-0 vote.
