The Champaign Police Department announced the results Wednesday of its participation in two national safety campaigns that tried to deter reckless driving over the holidays.
The city partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and other local law enforcement agencies to enforce the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket" campaigns from Dec 18 to Jan 3. The campaigns put more officers on the roads to educate drivers and discourage drunken driving and other dangerous driving choices.
The department reported just one DUI during the period, along 18 seat belt violations, six cell phone violations, two insurance violations, and two instances of driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Even though the holidays are over and the extra presence has drawn down, Champaign police still urge local drivers to keep their own safety and the safety of other motorists in mind and always buckle up.
