The Village Board of Colfax held its regular meeting Nov 2, unanimously approving the village's 2015-16 tax levy for $50,144.
Trustee David Rathke announced the police department will likely hire one of the three candidates interviewed before the meeting for a part-time police officer position. Dustin Carter currently works as a substitute officer in Lexington. He will be paid $15 per hour after completing the remainder of his training. The trustees said they will re-examine the other two finalists in the new year if other part-time positions are needed.
The department also has a new squad car on the way. Chief Michael Scott said he could give the village an estimate on the final price once he receives an appraisal on the value of the old squad car that was traded in.
The trustees also discussed finding a way for the village to buy the Catholic Church building. Mayor Ricardo Onken offered to write the official offer letter to the diocese, but only as a means of buying the village time, since the village does not currently have the resources to buy the building. The trustees mentioned an offer amount of $50,000, but no action was taken.
