The city of Champaign, Illinois recently approved three new contracts for five pending demolitions in the Bristol Place neighborhood as it continues its sweeping redevelopment project.
The city has either already acquired or expects to acquire 60 properties in the neighborhood. Nine of these have been demolished, with two more pending.
The new demolition contracts were awarded a week after the city held an open house for residents to provide information about the next phase of the development, including details on the Bristol Place Master Plan and examples from similarly designed development projects from around the country. Several residents expressed interest in remaining in their neighborhood and having input in the development as it moves forward.
There are still 31 property owners who have not agreed to sell their property. The city said it will contact them over the next few months to discuss negotiations.
The Bristol Place Phase II Steering Committee expects to select a developer to carry forward its master plan sometime early next year.
