In a recent legislative session, Democratic lawmakers in Springfield advanced Senate Bill 1911, which would "decouple" Illinois from certain federal tax relief measures. The bill is seen by critics as a move that will increase taxes on businesses and manufacturers throughout the state.

Republican legislators argue that this measure comes at a time when Illinois already has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. They warn that raising taxes could further hinder economic growth and make Illinois less attractive for new investments compared to other states offering incentives to attract factories and jobs.

Senate Republicans have expressed concerns that decoupling from federal relief efforts could send a negative message to companies considering expansion or relocation. They contend that while other states are lowering taxes to encourage business development, Illinois’ approach may deter job creation and investment.

The proposal has also drawn criticism for its potential impact on working families. "Governor Pritzker and his allies are prioritizing short-term revenue over long-term economic stability. Instead of creating jobs and helping families get ahead, Democrats are choosing yet another tax hike that raises costs, drives away opportunity, and makes it even harder for Illinois families to succeed," according to opponents of the bill.

Senate Bill 1911 now awaits Governor Pritzker’s signature before becoming law.

Rose, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2013 to represent the state's 51st Senate District, succeeding former senator Kyle McCarter.
