The City of Champaign organized its sixth annual America Recycles Day litter cleanup at Boneyard Creek on October 25. The event brought together 41 volunteers, including members from The Wildlife Society UIUC student chapter, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Curbanism Club, as well as high school and college students and families.
Participants collected several pick-up trucks' worth of litter and debris from more than a mile of the Boneyard Creek channel. Items removed included broken furniture, blankets, paper, plastic materials, Styrofoam, and cigarette butts. According to the organizers, “Events such as this help to remove unwanted and harmful debris from our waterways.”
America Recycles Day is an initiative by Keep America Beautiful that takes place nationally on November 15 each year to encourage recycling across the United States. Local affiliate communities host their own events in late October or early November to address specific local needs. The Champaign event aimed to raise awareness for the national America Recycles Day effort.
