City officials attend NAACP gala honoring local leaders

Deputy Mayor Will Kyles, Council Members Kathy Shannon and Shauna Clayborn, Equity and Engagement Community Relations Manager Tracy Parsons, Justice Victim Advocate Angela Worthey, and members of the Champaign Police Department Command Staff attended a gala hosted by the NAACP on October 25. The event focused on the theme “The Fierce Urgency of Now.”

During the event, Dr. Janette C. Wilson served as keynote speaker. She said, "The importance of taking action and doing the work to strengthen our communities in today’s society." After her speech, awards were presented to several community members.

Chief Timothy Tyler was recognized for his retirement after 35 years of military service. Other honorees included the St. Luke Food Pantry, Urbana Police Chief Larry Boone, and Nathan Dixon, a long-time community leader.
