Illinois women’s tennis athletes Alice Xu and Tess Bucher have advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the ITA Midwest Regionals, following an 8-6 win over Notre Dame’s Matsuno and Holod. The tournament is being held at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana.
In singles play, Ariel Madatali and McKenna Schaefbauer both moved into the round of 16. Madatali secured a straight-set victory against Wisconsin’s Kaede Usui, with scores of 6-4, 7-6(3). Schaefbauer won her match against Michigan’s Gabriella Vanessa Lindgren after dropping the first set but coming back to win in three sets: 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(5).
Cara Mester and Lizzie Isyanov were eliminated from singles competition after losing their respective matches in straight sets.
Matches on Day 3 began outdoors but some concluded indoors due to conditions. “Sunday's play will occur indoors beginning at 9 a.m. CT. Action will open with doubles quarterfinals followed by singles round of 16 and quarterfinals,” according to event organizers.
Xu and Bucher are scheduled to face Michigan’s top-seeded Jones and Bernales in the doubles quarterfinals. In singles, Schaefbauer will compete against Ellie Blackford from Michigan State, while Madatali is set to play Lily Jones from Michigan.
Day four action is slated to begin at 9 a.m., continuing at the Atkins Tennis Center.
