The University of Illinois Division of Public Safety and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics have announced the installation of walk-through metal detection systems at all entrances to Memorial Stadium. This change comes as season tickets for Illinois football have sold out for the first time in over two decades, with record attendance expected.
According to officials, fans will experience a security process similar to that at other major sports venues across the country. Visitors will keep their personal items while passing through the new metal detectors. If an alarm is triggered, individuals will undergo a secondary screening using a handheld wand.
Security staff note that some items, such as sunglasses cases and stadium seats, may still set off alarms despite the effectiveness of the system. Fans are encouraged to follow instructions from security personnel and place certain belongings aside before entering to help minimize delays.
The clear bag policy introduced by Illinois Athletics in 2018 remains unchanged. Those bringing bags must go through an existing bag check prior to passing through the metal detectors.
Officials state that these updates are intended to improve safety without causing significant entry delays. "The new screening process is designed to enhance safety without slowing entry. Along with previous seasons' additions of drone detection, on-site meteorologists, and expanded traffic closures, these updates reflect Illini Athletics' and the Division of Public Safety's shared commitment to providing the safest possible gameday experience."
