The Fighting Illini softball team claimed a decisive victory against Michigan State on Friday, defeating the Spartans 12-4 in five innings. The game took place in Urbana, Illinois, and marked a significant achievement for Eileen Donahue, who recorded her first collegiate grand slam.

The victory improved Illinois' season record to 16-19 overall and 3-7 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State's record fell to 12-21 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

Megan Nuechterlein, with a season record of 3-5, earned the win for Illinois. The right-handed pitcher completed five innings, allowing four runs, only one of which was earned. She yielded four hits, one walk, and struck out three batters.

In addition to Donahue's grand slam, she went 1-for-3 with four RBIs. Stevie Meade had a strong performance with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, including a home run, a walk, and three RBIs. Keirys Click contributed by recording one hit, which was a home run, in her sole plate appearance and added a walk and an RBI.

The scoring commenced for the Fighting Illini in the second inning, despite trailing 1-0 initially. Both Meade and Click hit home runs in the inning, contributing to a four-run score. Illinois continued to increase its lead in the following inning with two more runs, bringing the score to 6-1. Although Michigan State narrowed the gap to 6-4, Illinois responded with a six-run inning, capped by Donahue's grand slam, to secure the victory.

Among the game notes, it is worth mentioning that Illinois wore pink jerseys for the first time. The team achieved three homers, out-hit the Spartans at an 8-4 margin, and drew five walks from Michigan State pitching.
