Fighting Illini softball faced Northwestern in a doubleheader at Drysdale Field, resulting in a split day with one win and one loss. In their opening game, Illinois secured a close 2-1 victory over the Wildcats. The win took Illinois to an overall record of 15-19 and a 2-7 record in Big Ten play. Meanwhile, Northwestern held a 20-13-1 overall record, including a 9-1 league mark, with this game marking their first conference loss, notably given by Illinois.
During the first game, junior pitcher Karley Yergler delivered a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four batters. Yergler managed to prevent Northwestern from advancing with runners in scoring position, achieving a 0-for-5 restriction in such situations.
Illinois outpaced Northwestern in hits by 6-3 and also took advantage of four walks from the Wildcat pitchers. Adisyn Caryl contributed a double, and Ella Cushing was productive with an RBI from a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
The game scenario took a decisive turn in the sixth inning when Illinois trailed 1-0. Eilleen Donahue initiated the rally with a single, followed by Keirys Click's bunt single and a two-base error that tied the game. Cushing's RBI single ultimately secured the 2-1 lead, leading to Northwestern's first Big Ten loss this season.
However, the second game of the day was less successful for Illinois, resulting in an 8-2 loss. Freshman Keirys Click stood out despite the defeat, hitting her first collegiate home run and securing a 2-for-3 record at the plate. Paige Berkmeyer made her mark defensively, catching her 40th career stolen base attempt, maintaining her rank at third all-time in program records.
Looking ahead, Illinois prepares to host Michigan State for an upcoming Big Ten series, scheduled to start Friday with a game broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 7:30 p.m.
