The Champaign Police Department, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police, and over 200 local law enforcement agencies, is enhancing enforcement efforts in April in recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Motorists should expect heightened patrols focusing on driver distraction and other traffic violations.
Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler stated, "Every time we drive, we share the right-of-way with pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles large and small. We owe it to ourselves and our fellow travelers to give our full attention to the road and do our part to get everyone home safe."
Using a phone in a manner other than hands-free while driving is both dangerous and illegal in Illinois. Distracted driving not only involves cell phone use but can also include actions like using in-car navigation, eating, applying makeup, and engaging with passengers. According to IDOT, there were 58 fatalities in Illinois due to distracted driving in 2023.
The campaign aims to visibly enforce Illinois law to encourage driver attentiveness. Drivers identified as distracted or violating traffic rules will receive citations and written warnings as applicable. In Champaign, efforts will focus on main thoroughfares, especially those affecting neighborhoods.
The initiative is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
