A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Champaign County Election Division regarding the candidates running in the upcoming spring election on February 5, 2025. The request was made by us at Chambana Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The specific information requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, includes a list of all candidates running for office in the forthcoming election. The details sought about each candidate are their first, middle and last names; the office they are vying for; jurisdiction of the office; party affiliation; and contact information including address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization committed to transparency and accountability in public institutions, we believe access to such public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. We also indicated our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional due to our role in disseminating information to the public.
