The community gathered on January 19, 2025, to celebrate the annual Countywide Celebration honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event lasted two hours and recognized several notable individuals, including students who received scholarships, Pastor E. Shelby for his four decades of service in organizing the event, and Chancellor Robert J. Jones, acknowledged as the longest-serving Chancellor at the University of Illinois.

Mikal Washington, a Community Relations Specialist with the Equity and Engagement Department, honored three community members for their significant contributions to advancing Dr. King's legacy:

- Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award: Donna Tanner-Harold

- James R. Burgess – Susan Freiburg Humanitarian Award: Tracy Dace

- Martin Luther King Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award: Terry Townsend

City Council members and staff from various city departments were thanked for their support in honoring Dr. King's legacy.

After the celebration, a Unity Breakfast took place at Vineyard Church. This event celebrated the efforts of the Scholarship and Advocacy for Justice Committees in coordinating these activities and provided an additional opportunity to honor scholarship recipients and their families.
