On January 15, city staff from the Police, Legal, and Equity & Engagement Departments met with the New American Welcome Center to discuss the Illinois TRUST Act. This 2018 law dictates how Illinois law enforcement interacts with federal immigration authorities, prohibiting them from engaging in civil immigration enforcement. The meeting was organized by members of the Public Safety Group of the Champaign County Welcoming Plan.

During the event, a presentation on Champaign Police operations and the law was given. Following this, a panel discussion took place featuring Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler, City Attorney Tom Yu, police chiefs from Urbana and the University of Illinois Police, and the Champaign County Sheriff. The session allowed for questions and open dialogue among more than 50 local service providers who attended. Local agencies such as Champaign Fire hosted resource tables to offer information and promote community safety.
