Champaign County Community Coalition discusses local initiatives at monthly meeting

The Champaign County Community Coalition convened for its monthly meeting on January 8, 2025, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. Various organizations shared updates and plans during the session.

Champaign County Young Lives presented their program supporting expecting and parenting adolescents by providing mentorship and services such as residential housing options. They also organize events for young parents who cannot participate in traditional programs.

CU One to One Mentoring discussed their mission, upcoming training opportunities, and scholarship funds available to participating students. CU Schools Foundation provided an overview of their organization, unveiled a new strategic plan, and announced a grant cycle for spring to support teachers with classroom supplies.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countywide Celebration is scheduled for January 19 at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. A Unity Breakfast will follow on January 20 at Vineyard Church. Awards will be presented to community members: James R. Burgess, Jr., Doris Hoskins, and Terry Townsend will receive honors recognizing their contributions.

Community members emphasized supporting an April 1 referendum to advance efforts for a low-barrier shelter. The City of Urbana shared updates on initiatives like a new grocery store opening, a grant addressing food insecurity, and launching a health center.

Illinois Soul plans to celebrate its one-year anniversary on February 1 at Tyron Festival Theatre. An event is also planned for service providers to learn about the Illinois Trust Act.
