The game began with five lead changes within the first three minutes before Illinois settled into their rhythm. Jakucionis scored eight of Illinois' first ten points, helping initiate a 15-2 run that gave them an early double-digit lead.

Illinois extended their lead further in the first half with a series of runs, reaching a 30-point advantage before halftime. They led by as much as 31 points during the game.

In addition to their scoring prowess, Illinois dominated in rebounding during the first half with a significant edge on both ends of the court. Ivisic and Jakucionis were key contributors offensively in this period.

Despite Indiana starting strong in the second half with a 10-0 run to reduce their deficit below 20 points for a brief period, Illinois responded decisively with another run to secure their commanding lead once more.
