The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at the Market Place Shopping Center, located at 2000 N. Neil St., on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 11:39 a.m. The fire crews managed to extinguish the small fire promptly.

Firefighters were alerted by an employee who reported smoke emanating from ceiling tiles in a store. Upon arrival, firefighters upgraded the situation to a working incident after discovering that the small fire was confined to ventilation equipment. A single hose line was used to put out the fire. As part of their response, a second alarm was called while crews evacuated the shopping center and isolated the ventilation system within the affected area.

The cause of the fire has been identified as accidental, linked to a heating element in the ventilation system. One firefighter received treatment for a minor injury on site, but no injuries were reported among occupants. Only one store experienced minor damage due to the incident.
