The Public Works Director has announced the activation of the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas. According to records, Champaign experienced at least two inches of snow during the recent weekend storm. To enhance pedestrian safety, city ordinance mandates that sidewalks be cleared within 48 hours following this declaration.

The compliance period begins at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025. Sidewalks must be cleared by 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Property owners are required to maintain a path either as wide as the sidewalk or up to forty-eight inches, whichever is less. For properties located at corners, ramps must also be cleared to ensure continuous paths from block to block. Non-compliance may result in the City clearing sidewalks at the owner's expense. The City appreciates property owners' efforts in making sidewalks safer for pedestrians and those with various transportation needs.

A map detailing Downtown and Campustown areas affected by this ordinance is available on the City's website at champaignil.gov/snow.

Residents and businesses are reminded not to deposit snow removed from their property onto City streets as it poses risks for vehicles. Furthermore, all residents and businesses across Champaign are encouraged to clear their sidewalks for improved pedestrian access and safety. Those along designated Safe Routes to School should keep pathways clear for students and parents’ safe travel. Safe Route maps can be accessed online at ccrpc.org/transportation/safe_walking_route_maps/index.php.
