The Public Works Director has announced the activation of the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirement for Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas. Champaign received at least two inches of snow over the weekend, prompting this decision. The City Ordinance mandates that sidewalks be cleared within 48 hours following the director's declaration.
Compliance begins at noon on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, with a deadline of noon on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Sidewalks must have a clear path either as wide as the sidewalk or up to 48 inches, whichever is less. Property owners with corner lots must also ensure ramps are cleared to maintain a continuous path from block to block. If sidewalks are not cleared in compliance with these regulations, the City may undertake the clearing at the owner's expense.
The City appreciates property owners' cooperation in making sidewalks safer for pedestrians and those with multimodal transportation needs. A map of affected areas and details about the ordinance can be found on the City's website at champaignil.gov/snow.
Residents and businesses are reminded not to deposit snow from their properties onto City streets due to potential hazards for vehicles. All city residents and businesses are encouraged to clear their sidewalks for safer pedestrian travel. Those along designated Safe Routes to School should ensure pathways remain clear for students and parents.
