The Illinois Fighting Illini emerged victorious in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, defeating South Carolina with a score of 21-17. This win marks Illinois' first bowl victory since 2011 and their tenth win of the 2024 season, tying the program's single-season record.
Illinois achieved its fifth fourth-quarter comeback this year, taking the lead with just over seven minutes left in the game. Josh McCray was named MVP of the game, recording two rushing touchdowns on 13 carries for 114 yards. His performance included a career-long 60-yard rush that helped secure the victory.
Quarterback Luke Altmyer completed 13 of his 22 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown. Zakhari Franklin caught four passes for 39 yards and scored a touchdown in the first quarter. Hank Beatty also had a notable performance with four catches for a career-high 90 yards.
The Illini defense contributed significantly by forcing turnovers at crucial moments. Matthew Bailey led with 13 tackles, while Ezekiel Holmes forced his first career fumble during the third quarter.
South Carolina initially took an early lead with a field goal but struggled to maintain it against Illinois' persistent offense and defense. Despite regaining leads throughout the game, South Carolina could not hold off Illinois' final push in the fourth quarter.
This victory adds to Coach Bret Bielema's achievements at Illinois, marking his first ten-win season with the team since he joined in 2021. The Illini finished their season with a record of 10-3 and have now won four games against ranked opponents this year.
Illinois has now improved its bowl game record to nine wins out of twenty-one appearances and remains undefeated at Camping World Stadium.
