The Champaign Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 600 block of English Creek Ct. on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 2:34 p.m. The fire crews managed to bring the situation under control quickly.
Firefighters were alerted by an occupant about the fire in a single-family home. Upon arrival, they observed light smoke emerging from the front door of the two-story duplex. The residents had already evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. A single hose line was used to extinguish the fire.
The investigation concluded that the cause of the fire was accidental and linked to cooking activities. No injuries were reported among firefighters. However, one resident received treatment on-site and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for further care. Additionally, two dogs and one cat were safely rescued from the premises.
Authorities remind residents: "Remember, when the smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out." They also advise that if evacuation through smoke is necessary, individuals should remain low to the ground and close doors behind them to slow down smoke and fire spread while assisting others in exiting safely.
