The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment building in the 600 block of W. Columbia Ave. on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 10:36 p.m. Fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze swiftly.

Firefighters arrived following a report from an occupant about the fire in this multi-family apartment building. Upon arrival, they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story structure. All occupants had exited the building by the time firefighters reached the scene. Crews used multiple hose lines to put out the fire.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined as investigators continue their work at the site. No firefighter injuries were reported. However, one occupant received treatment on-site and was transported to a local hospital for further care. Unfortunately, one cat perished in the incident. The fire has displaced the building's occupants.
