The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence in the 1400 block of W. Clark St. on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:12 a.m. The fire crews quickly managed to control the situation.

The firefighters were alerted by a passerby about the fire in a single-family home. Upon arrival, they observed moderate smoke and flames emanating from the single-story building. A hose line was deployed into the residence to extinguish the fire.

Currently, investigators are still working to determine the cause of the blaze. No injuries were reported among firefighters, and the home's occupant was not present during the incident. Unfortunately, two dogs lost their lives in the fire.

Authorities remind residents that when a smoke alarm sounds, it is crucial to evacuate immediately and stay outside. In cases where escaping through smoke is necessary, staying low to the ground can help. Closing doors while exiting can slow down smoke and fire spread and assist others in leaving safely.
