Champaign County Community Coalition reviews mental health conference and other key initiatives

The Champaign County Community Coalition convened its monthly meeting on November 13, 2024, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. The agenda included several key topics of community interest.

A detailed recap of the Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference was presented. Held on October 26 at Parkland College, the conference featured sessions that involved local community partners who provided resources and information. Attendees were informed about session highlights, attendance figures, and outcomes. Two sessions, "Joe Omo-Osagie's Pursuing Wellness" and "Karen Simms Understanding Racial Trauma," are available for review on the City of Champaign’s website.

A tribute honored Chief of Police Timothy Tyler from A Cry for You, a foundation supporting mothers who have lost children to gun violence. This tribute recognized police efforts in addressing gun violence and their support for affected families.

The Salvation Army updated attendees on their services, including ESL classes, Canteen runs, youth initiatives, and veteran support programs. They encouraged community involvement through clothing donations and volunteering as bell ringers during the holiday season.

The Healing Project shared an overview of their grassroots initiative focused on healing and social change through socially engaged art. They discussed their history, mission, current focus, and ongoing projects.

A summary of the Homelessness Summit held on November 12 at the Champaign Public Library was also provided. The summit gathered local organizations to discuss strategies for addressing homelessness in the community.

In response to previous youth panel discussions this spring, a Youth Survey was developed with United Way and the Campus-Community Compact to Accelerate Social Justice. This survey aims to collect insights into local youths' experiences and perspectives to guide future engagement efforts.
