Illinois wrestling team set for competition against Binghamton and Arizona State

The No. 13 Illinois wrestling team is preparing for a weekend of competition in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Fighting Illini will participate in the Journeymen WrangleMania duals on Saturday, November 9, where they will face Binghamton and No. 21 Arizona State. The match against Binghamton is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., followed by the encounter with Arizona State at 3 p.m. Central Time.

Following the duals, Illinois will compete in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic tournament on Sunday, November 10.

Illinois began their season with a strong performance, achieving a 41-3 victory over SIU-Edwardsville. Despite losing the first match at 125 pounds, redshirt senior Lucas Byrd secured the team's first win with a major decision victory over Marcel Lopez at 133 pounds. The team continued to dominate by winning all eight subsequent matches.

Arizona State concluded their previous season as Pac-12 Champions with an overall dual record of 7-6 and a conference record of 4-1. Historically, Illinois holds a perfect 3-0 dual record against Arizona State since their first meeting on November 16, 2013. Their last matchup was on January 29, 2017, when Illinois won decisively with a score of 26-9.

Binghamton finished their last season with a dual record of 9-4 and placed eighth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships. Illinois previously defeated Binghamton in their only meeting on November 24, 2012, with a score of 39-10.
