FOIA Request to City Of Urbana Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Collected from Retailers on October 25, 2024. The request was made by Chambana Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We at Chambana Sun have requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we are seeking information about sales tax collected from retailers starting from January 1, 204 till the present date. The details we have asked for include the amount of sales tax collected each month compared to projections, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month, and the names of each retailer along with their reported gross retail sales for each month.
As a media organization, our role is to gather and report news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
