FOIA Request to City of Champaign Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Collected from Retailers on October 25, 2024.
In a continued effort to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the Chambana Sun have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City of Champaign Finance Department. The request pertains specifically to sales tax collected from retailers starting from January 1, 2024 till today's date.
The requested records include detailed information such as the amount of sales tax collected from retailers by month versus projected figures, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax by month, and the names of each retailer along with their gross retail sales reported for each month.
As a media organization committed to transparency and holding public institutions accountable, access to these public records is essential for us at Chambana Sun. We believe that obtaining this information will not only help us fulfill our professional responsibilities but also provide our readers with valuable insights into local government operations.
We have also requested a fee waiver given our role in disseminating important information to the public as media professionals.
The City of Champaign Finance Department has yet to respond to our request.
