The Illinois women's basketball team secured a spot in the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) championship with an 81-58 victory over Washington State. The game took place at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, where Illinois led for nearly the entire match.
Makira Cook was the leading scorer with 20 points, contributing significantly in the first half. Cook also provided five assists, one rebound, and one steal. Genesis Bryant added 18 points, making three 3-pointers and collecting two rebounds and one assist. Adalia McKenzie scored 14 points on efficient shooting while securing four rebounds and forcing three steals.
Camille Hobby contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds, along with an assist and a steal. Kendall Bostic added seven points and nine rebounds, assisting four times. Gretchen Dolan came off the bench to score seven points and make two steals.
Illinois started strong with Cook scoring early. Despite a brief tie by Washington State, Illinois quickly regained control with contributions from McKenzie and Cook. A significant run gave Illinois a comfortable lead that they maintained throughout the game.
By halftime, Illinois had a 42-28 lead thanks to effective shooting from Cook and Bryant. In the second half, Illinois continued to extend their lead with contributions from Bostic and McKenzie.
Washington State attempted to close the gap but could not overcome Illinois' advantage. The Illini's defense was effective in forcing turnovers while limiting second-chance opportunities for Washington State.
The win allows Illinois to compete for their first postseason tournament victory against Villanova on Wednesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. CT.
Genesis Bryant reached a milestone by surpassing 1,000 career points during this game. Makira Cook also achieved a personal milestone by reaching over 1,600 career points.
