The University of Illinois men's golf team, ranked 18th nationally, is leading the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate after the first two rounds. The event is taking place at Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois. Ryan Voois and Max Herendeen are tied as individual leaders, each contributing to the team's strong performance with a 14-stroke lead.
Ryan Voois began the tournament with an impressive bogey-free round, scoring a personal-best and tournament-record 64 (-7). Despite windy conditions, his score was five strokes better than any other golfer's in the first two rounds. However, he fell back slightly during Round 2 with a score of 76 (+5), bringing him to 2-under overall.
Max Herendeen managed to keep pace by being the only player to shoot consecutive rounds at par or better on Day 1. He opened with a 69 (-2) and followed up with an even-par 71 in Round 2, tying him with Voois for the lead after 36 holes.
Jackson Buchanan and Timmy Crawford are both tied for sixth place. They each shot a 3-over-par in Round 1 before improving to even-par in Round 2. Jerry Ji and Piercen Hunt also posted top-10 scores for Illinois.
Freshman Ethan Wilson ended Day 1 tied for 13th place after rounds of 74 and 73. Tyler Goecke is further down the leaderboard, tied for 62nd place.
Illinois recorded two of the day's four lowest scores: a team total of 281 in Round 1 and a follow-up score of 291 in Round 2, totaling at +4 over par.
Northwestern follows Illinois in second place, trailing by fourteen strokes. Michigan and Michigan State are tied for third place, while Toledo holds fifth position going into Sunday's final round.
Round three will commence at approximately 8:30 a.m., with Illinois paired alongside Northwestern and Michigan starting their tee times from hole number one at around mid-morning.
