Fighting Illini alumni Thomas Detry, Nick Hardy, and Steve Stricker are set to participate in the 50th edition of THE PLAYERS Championship. The event begins on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
Steve Stricker returns to THE PLAYERS for the 23rd time in his career, having last competed in 2021. The seasoned golfer has achieved eight top-25 finishes at this event, with his best performance being a tie for sixth place in 1999. Stricker secured his spot this year by winning the Kaulig Companies Championship during the previous season, one of six victories on the PGA Tour Champions circuit in 2023. Last week, he finished tied for 32nd at the Cologuard Classic.
Both Thomas Detry and Nick Hardy will be making their second consecutive appearances at THE PLAYERS Championship as they aim to make their first cut at this prestigious tournament. Recently, Hardy was seen supporting the Illini men's basketball team courtside during their game against Purdue.
Although not competing in THE PLAYERS this week, former Illini Adrien Dumont de Chassart recently achieved a career milestone with a tie for sixth place finish at the Puerto Rico Open. This marked his third made cut out of eight PGA Tour events this year and his first top-10 finish.
